TL;DR: I ‘m returning to this blog after experimenting with writing elsewhere. I’m dropping the “NZ” and just calling it Wealth & Risk. I’ve imported articles from my other blog and plan to publish new articles on Fridays at 8am. Same independent approach as before - no advertising third party products or services.

After some time in the wilderness – metaphorically speaking! – I’ve decided to publish on this blog again.

For a while, I experimented with writing elsewhere. I started a personal blog which I tentatively called “Devil’s Avocado”. I wrote about how writing on the new blog was like throwing mud at the wall, in terms of writing about stuff and seeing what sticks, in terms of topics and themes I kept returning to.

I wrote less often. Part of it is due to my focus being elsewhere. But part of it was because the new blog never “clicked” with me. I was never committed to the project in the way I was with this blog.

I’ve been reflecting on it, and NZ Wealth & Risk feels like “home” when it comes to writing. I want to come home.

NZ Wealth & Risk -> Wealth & Risk

Confession time: I hate the name NZ Wealth & Risk. Always have! I’ve just never been able to think of anything better!

Having said that, I’m going to embrace it. Except now I’m just going to refer to it as Wealth & Risk (WAR for short?).

I’m not going to give the “NZ” or “New Zealand” part prominent billing. I’ll retain the .nz on the URL, and include disclaimers to make it clear that anything finance-related is for a New Zealand audience.

However, a lot of it isn’t going to be strictly about personal finance. Some stuff might be specific to being a Kiwi, but most of the content will be pretty universal. (Hopefully!!)

Wealth & Risk is just a title for a personal blog. I’ll return to the themes of “wealth” and “risk” (defined broadly) at different times, in various ways. A central theme will continue to be about living in line with your values and priorities, just as before.

But I’m not going to constrain myself to that, and I’m not going to apologise for writing about other things.

“Wealth & Risk” is simply a title for “Sonnie Bailey’s personal blog”.

New articles

As well as publishing this article, announcing my return to blogging on the Wealth & Risk blog, I have imported the articles I published on the Devil’s Avocado blog. These include:

  • Flawcastr – be a legend, help me build something open-source and super-cool that can help lots of people!
  • Software development – seeking feedback, guidance, collaborators, and mentors
  • Evolving thoughts on private education
  • Pixie – a general purpose ranking and prioritising tool
  • “Equality”
  • A podcast for two
  • Flying kites
  • Movies & TV shows I’m looking forward to in 2024
  • Utilitarian vs Kantian ethics
  • Why would an entrepreneur seek external finance when they have the funds themselves?
  • Reimagining Babylon: a majestic bastard of a film
  • Ways I use AI in my day-to-day life
  • Y2K and Covid
  • Things you can buy me 😜
  • “Written quickly, not perfectly”
  • Quick questions (and fast answers)
  • Questions! – my first “app”
  • Midjourney art gallery
  • AI for getting writing feedback
  • Throwing mud at the wall

Going forward, my plan is to start publishing new articles at Friday at 8am (NZ time!), the same as before. Whether or not that happens, I’m not 100% sure, but I hope that’s the case. Once I am confident that I’m back in the groove, I’ll start sending monthly emails to subscribers of the old NZ Wealth & Risk newsletter very soon.

Cui bono? (Who benefits?)

As with before, this blog isn’t going to advertise third party products or services.

I may promote my own products or services. However, at the moment, I have nothing to offer. Fairhaven Wealth may return but it remains out-of-service for the immediate future. I’m working on a variety of software projects (which I discuss in some of the articles), but I plan on most of them being open-source projects.

For now, the main selfish reason that I’m blogging is because it’s good for my soul.
