In the past year or so, I’ve been trying to become “handier”.

As in, able to fix, improve, and make stuff around the house.

A few insights have helped with this process:

You’re not born “handy” – no one is born with an innate skillset, nor born with inherent knowledge of what certain tools do and how to use them. Some people might find it easier and more intuitive to learn than others, but everyone has to learn.

The distinction between being “handy” and “not handy” is not a binary, yes or no distinction. It is actually a spectrum – of being more or less handy.

You can move up this spectrum, and become handier!!!

Being “handy” is actually a range of different kind of skills. Some of them overlap, and some of them are completely distinct.

There are almost always multiple ways of doing something, each with their own pros and cons. Similarly, if something goes wrong, it is almost always fixable.

Becoming handier makes the world even more fascinating!!! Every time in a built environment, I wonder about how certain things are made, and why certain decisions were made. As I often find – the more you learn, and the more you’re interested in things – the more interesting the world becomes!
