In rough order of anticipation (highest to lowest). Of course, there are lots of movies that won’t be on this list, either because I’m not aware of them or because I’m not personally anticipating them.
Furiosa – follow-up to Max Max: Fury Road
Dune Part 2 – not only do I look forward to seeing this movie, but I look forward to watching Dune Part 1 , which I’ve refused to watch until Part 2 was out.
Wicked Part 1 – I enjoyed the stage play. A nice twist to The Wizard of Oz lore.
Deadpool 3 – Ryan Reynold’s Deadpool is joined by Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine
My Old Ass – time travel, romance, Aubrey Plaza.
Avatar 3 - scheduled for December 2024.
Imaginary Friends – I like the concept, and the people involved. The trailer didn’t sell me, though.
Project Hail Mary - not sure whether this will be released in 2024 (or at all), but signs are promising. Based on Andy Weir’s novel, which I enjoyed, with directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller attached (21 Jump Street and 22 Jump Street , Lego Movie , the Spider-Verse movies), as well as Ryan Gosling.
Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse – if this movie sticks the landing, I have a feeling this animated movie will in in contention for a best-picture Oscar.
Twisters – a “new chapter” to the 1990s movie, Twister. I have fond memories of seeing that film in the theatre.
Inside Out 2
Madame Web – a spider-wo man movie. Trailer looked promising.
Gladiator 2 – I’m surprised that this is happening, directed by Ridley Scott no less. My understanding is that it’s not based on the script allegedly written by Nick Cave.
Argylle – mainly because Kingsman director Matthew Vaughn is at the helm. When he hits, he hits (the first Kingsman movie, Kick-Ass , Stardust), and this movie looks like it’s in his wheelhouse.
Red Notice 2 – I enjoyed the first 🤷
Beetlejuice 2 – more out of fascination than anything.
Bad Blood - the Elizabeth Holmes story, directed by Adam McKay
Joker: Folie à Deux – mainly because Lady Gaga is taking on the role of Harley Quinn; a bold choice when Margot Robbie’s version of the character is so set in many people’s minds.
Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley – morbid fascination, still running on the hope of an Eddie Murphy comedic renaissance.
Civil War – directed by Alex Garland, who wrote Ex Machina among other things (ie, Annihilation and Men).
If I’m honest, this list doesn’t especially inspire me compared to other years I’ve written a similar list.
TV shows
(Focusing on new shows rather than returning shows.)
3 Body Problem – based on a lauded book series. The prose didn’t grab me so I didn’t get far, but the ideas were fascinating. David Benioff and D. B. Weiss of Game of Thrones fame are executive producing. Fortunately, the source material is complete, so we don’t need to rely on them to try to construct the landing.
Dark Matter , based on a novel by Blake Crouch which I loved
Avatar: The Last Airbender – live action version of a much-loved animated show.
Time Bandits – a new take on a Monty Python project, with executor producers Taika Waititi, Jermain Clement, and Iain Morris (who produced The Inbetweeners)
